Designers are creators of models, prototypes, and propositions [who] occupy a dialectical space between the world that is and the world that can be. Informed by the past and the present, their activities oriented towards the future. Im Mittelpunkt der Ausstellung Militanter Optimismus*/Plakativer Aktivismus. Global Design Politics steht Design in seiner politischen und gesellschaftlichen Dimension. Verbindet sich aktives Handeln mit Strategien, die sich der Ironie, der Poesie, der Subversion oder der Provokation bedienen, werden Worte, Symbole, Zeichen und Objekte zu machtvollen Agenten im Kontext gesellschaftspolitischer Aktion. Anhand von ausgewählten historischen und zeitgenössischen Positionen der letzten fünfzig Jahre zeigt die Ausstellung, wie sich Design als radikale ästhetische Praxis den wesentlichen Diskursen der jeweiligen Zeit annimmt. So werden gegenwärtige Konditionen kritisch verhandelt, Alternativen geschaffen, Brüche erzeugt und neue Visionen enthüllt.

The exhibition MILITANT OPTIMISM / BOLD ACTIVISM. Global Design Politics explores the political and social dimensions of design. When activist intervention is linked with strategies such as irony, poetry, subversion and provocation, then words, symbols, signs and objects become powerful agents of socio-political action. Highlighting historical and contemporary design positions from the last fifty years, the exhibition demonstrates how design as a radical aesthetic practice takes on the key discourses relevant to the respective period. As a result, current conditions are critically negotiated, alternatives created, ruptures generated and new visions unfolded.
