Die Abschlussausstellung des Projekts NEW PARAMETERS OF MAKING (2020–2022) lenkt den Blick auf Objekte als materielle Formen des kulturellen Gedächtnisses und fragt danach, wie Objekte einerseits Wissen speichern, andererseits Wissen vermitteln können. Im aktuellen postkolonialen Diskurs rücken dabei lokale Wissenssysteme in den Fokus, die in Materialien, Techniken und Herstellungsverfahren, aber auch in der Verwendung spezifischer Motive und Symbole sowie in der Nutzung von Objekten selbst, etwa in Ritualen, zum Ausdruck kommen.
In Zusammenarbeit mit Projektpartner/innen aus Nigeria und Äthiopien fand eine gemeinsame Bestandsaufnahme statt, die sich mit dem (trans-)kulturellen Erbe der Vergangenheit auseinandersetzte und dabei den Blick nach vorne richtete: Was aus der Vergangenheit ist es wert, mit in die Zukunft genommen zu werden? Welche Geschichten sollen fortgeschrieben, welche neu erzählt werden?
Auf der Grundlage intensiver Recherchen zu lokalen Materialien, Herstellungstechniken, Objekt- und Architekturformen sowie Ritualen, hier der Kaffeezeremonie in Äthiopien, werden diese Kulturformen als Wissensarchive – als materielle Formen des kollektiven Gedächtnisses – befragt. Sie dienen als Basis für die Entwicklung von Prototypen, die auf jenes Wissen zurückgreifen und es zeitgenössisch interpretieren. Begleitend dazu wird die umfangreiche Designforschung in Nigeria in Form einer ‚Design Map‘ visualisiert, ergänzt von dokumentarischem Bild- und Filmmaterial.
The final exhibition of the NEW PARAMETERS OF MAKING project focuses on objects as a material form of cultural memory and poses the question of how objects can both store and convey knowledge. In the current post-colonial discourse, local knowledge systems are gaining in importance, which find expression in materials, techniques and manufacturing processes, but also in the use of specific motifs and symbols as well as in the use of objects themselves, for example in rituals.
In collaboration with project partners from Nigeria and Ethiopia, a joint survey was carried out, looking at the (trans-)cultural heritage of the past and focusing on the future: What from the past is worth taking into the future? Which stories should be continued, and which should be retold?
Based on intensive research into local materials, production techniques, object and architectural forms, as well as rituals, such as the coffee ceremony in Ethiopia, these cultural forms are examined as archives of knowledge – as material forms of collective memory. They serve as a basis for the development of prototypes that draw on this knowledge and provide a contemporary interpretation. Alongside, the extensive design research in Nigeria is visualised in the form of a ‘design map’, complemented by documentary images and film material.
